Horn Performance Major
Emilio Colinas was born in Caracas, Venezuela, where he began his musical studies at the age of 15 in the program "El sistema". He studied at the University of Los Andes in 2012 under his mentors Andres Aragon and Gregory Ayala. During that time he was part of the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra on international tours.
"My main goal is to be a member of a professional orchestra in the United States or Germany.
WAU chose me.
I find WAU as the perfect institution that will provide me with the adequate tools for my future - one that provides a creative, deeply personal and relevant college experience.
I'm looking for knowledge acquisition, challenges, and taking part in the community by teaching children to support social change through music. During my time in Venezuela, I’ve participated in El Sistema - a publicly financed, voluntary sector, music-education program. I have challenged myself with rigorous repertoire and fascinating opportunities that made me go beyond my comfort zone.
Personally, I aim for a career in music performance, and WAU promises challenges, inspiration, support, encouragement and an experience not only in my formal education, but also extracurricular activities, lifelong friends, and an energetic college atmosphere. I visualize myself making an impact on people’s perspectives towards music with my playing. More than just being a way to express or escape from my surroundings, it is something that defines me, and honestly, I do not see myself doing anything else. For this reason, it’s imperative to receive an exceptional education — one that values the prominence of hard work, determination, and diversity in the world of music. An education that only WAU can provide."
